The Boys From Indiana were a traditional bluegrass group, originating from Milan, Indiana, formed in 1973 by brothers Aubrey and Jerry Holt, their Uncle Harley Gabbard, and Middletown, Ohio radio host and fiddle player Paul “Moon” Mullins, along with banjo player Noah Crase. The Boys recorded an all-Gospel album, as their first project, but success came a few years later, in 1975, after they recorded “Atlanta is Burning”, the title song of their second album and a compelling love story about a Civil War soldier who must leave his new bride and unborn child when duty calls. The song gained them national attention and they began touring heavily throughout the United States and Canada.
During the late 1970’s, original members Paul Mullins and Noah Crase departed, but brother Tom Holt joined the group and began choreographing their live stage shows with original show tunes and antics that made them immediately fan-favorites. The Boys travelled all the way to Washington D.C., in 1988, to play the Christmas Pageant of Peace, under President Reagan’s administration. Strong original material, tight harmonies, and show tunes combined with on-stage antics secured the Boys From Indiana’s place in bluegrass music history as some of the greatest entertainers the business has ever seen.
In 1994, original members Jerry Holt and Tom Holt departed to pursue other careers. Aubrey and Harley continued on with the Boys through the end of 1995 and decided to disband. In the twenty-two years of their traveling and making music, the Boys entertained thousands of fans and inspired a whole new generation of bluegrass artists. Aubrey and Tom Holt’s songs have been recorded by the likes of Alison Krauss, Charlie Moore, Blue Highway, Cherryholmes, The Grascals, Joe Mullins and the Radio Ramblers, The Wildwood Valley Boys, Feller and Hill, and many, many more.
